.1 ¶ Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
 2  Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
 3  That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
.4  And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
   1 - Obey your parents Notice the condition.
   4 - Provoke not This gives guidance for using the rod mentioned in Proverbs pr1324. Also co0321.
.5  Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
.6  Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
.7  With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
 8  Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
.9  And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.
  5 - Servants Or "slaves." Greek douloi. See on ro0101. Although not forbidden in the Bible, principles are given that would eventually end slavery de1426, 1co0720, plm.
  5 - Obedient Christian slaves would have special opportunities to witness to the upper class.
  5 - According to the flesh No one can keep the spirit in bondage.
  5 - Singleness As explained in the next verse.
  6 - Servants They do God's will—are obedient. What is that will? See ps4008, re1401.
  8 - Knowing ... receive God is not prejudiced ac1034 and will reward all fairly in the life to come.
  9 - Masters do the same God advice for employers, too.
.10 ¶ Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
 11  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
.12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
   11 - The whole armor The armor is different because, in v12, the battle is different.
   12 - Rulers of the darkness See jn1231; ep0202. Before the coming of Jesus, the occult will be have a stronger influence 2th0208,9, re1614, re1313. I believe we see this now.
   On another page, I share basic thoughts on Pokémon and Harry Potter p&hp.
  12 - In high places Translated "in heavenly places" elsewhere. See on ep0103. The wickedness may be in places of authority or by leaders who pretend to sit with Christ presuming to have His authority. I prefer the latter.

.13  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
 14  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
 15  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
 16  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
.17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

  13 - Wherefore See v12. Take It is available for those who want it. Whole armour to be fully prepared to stand re0617.
  14 - Truth We put it on and not just have it on the shelf. With truth about God applied to the life jn1703, all else falls into place. 1co0508, 2co0714, 2co1110, ph0118, ep0509, jn0832.
  14 - Brestplate of righteousness is5917, 1th0508. The bullet-proof vest. The full righteousness is what Christ does in us as well as for us 1jo0109, co0206, ro0117.
  15 - Feet shod Roman soldiers needed good sandals. They also wore greaves. The word appears "only in 1Sa 17:6, a piece of defensive armour (q.v.) reaching from the foot to the knee." (Eastons Bible Dict.) The soldier of Christ would would need to stand firm v13. Elsewhere feet walk to carry the gospel is5207, ro1015.
  16 - Above all Or, in some manuscripts, "in addition to all."
  16 - Shield of faith By faith is victory 1jo0504. Also he1106. In these days there are many fiery darts of twisted doctrine ac2029 as well as temptations 1co1013.
  17 - Sword ... is word of God is4902. The Greek  for "word" is from rhema meaning "something spoken." so the sword is more than the Scriptures. Because all scripture is inspired 2ti0316, what is spoken is in harmony with truth. It could also be the words of a prophet. The primary meaning is the Bible as defined in our verse.
 18  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
 19 ¶ And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
.20  For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
  18 - Praying always Or "on every occasion." How important, in the battle of life, to stay in communication with our commander. We need to commit our lives to Christ in the morning but then renew the contact as we move through the day. 1th0517.
  18 - Perseverance So important, particularly for overcoming and supplication for others.
  20 - In bonds Literally "in a chain." Bound to Christ.
  20 - Boldly Consider ga0220.
.21  But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:
 22  Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.
 23  Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
 24  Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen. <<To the Ephesians written from Rome, by Tychicus.>>
  21 - Know my affairs He was in prison writing in about A.D. 62. Compare co0407.
  21 - Tychicus Also named in ac2004, co0407, 2ti0412, tt0312. Probably an Ephesian.
  21 - Minister From diakonos meaning waiter, deacon. See ep0307, mr0935.
  23 - Peace As in ep0102.
  23 - Brethren Or all the congregation.
  24 - Sincerity Literally, "not corrupt" 1co1542.
