Psalm 41

Be merciful and heal my soul
.
Text
Explanation
A time of illness and betrayal by former friends
1 ¶ <<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.
2 The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.
Poor From dal, "the low," "the hopeless," or "the poor."
Time of trouble Literally, "the day of evil."
Lord will preserve The promise was conditional, dependent on Israel becoming a righteous nation de2801. Also ps00103, ps03703. Israel as a nation failed mt2140. Jewish people may be saved as any of us are but the idea that they will act again as a nation is contrary to the text linked above. The new Israel is those who accept Christ ga0326.
Will of his enemies "Will" is from nephesh. See on ps02712.
3 The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.
.4 I said, LORD, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.
  Make Or "turn."
Soul From nephesh "self" or "soul." When the paralyzed man was let down from the roof, Jesus granted spiritual healing before physical healing mr0205.
Sinned Our sin against God's laws of health bring physical sickness. This may be more true in our time of advanced medical knowledge than before. Compare ps03803.
5 ¶ Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish?
6 And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he telleth it.
7 All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt.
Speaketh vanity Or "speaketh emptiness." Speaking evil of others is a destructive habit.
Whisper together against me We may call this character assassination. Then no matter how good and helpful the target person is, he fails for lack of cooperation.
8 An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.
9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
10 But thou, O LORD, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them.
Familiar friend Some believe this to be Ahithophel when Absalom was in rebellion. 2sa1531, ps05512.
11 By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.
12 And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever.
.13 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.
Favourest me The Psalmist may not have understood that good and bad circumstances are not necessarily results of good and bad behavior ja0117, mt0545. Job's friends misunderstood the principle jb0407.
