Psalm 52

Boasting
.
Text
Explanation
The theme of this psalm is in its first verse.
.1 ¶ <<To the chief Musician, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.>> Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.
2 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully,
2 - Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, "O worker of deceit." (NASB).
Boastest A more modern word is "brag." David's psalm on this topic was apparently prompted by his experience relating to Doeg noted in the superscription. See 1sa2101 and 1sa2211.
Goodness of God This is constant and pure.
  Tongue Compare ps01203, ps07836, ps10902.
Mischiefs Consider the context to understand the word "mischief" which today is related to playfulness.
3 Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
4 Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.
 -
5 God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.   Destroy The permanent destruction is the second death re2108, mal0401, ob16. For Doeg the statement could have also had a contemporary meaning concerning his family line.
6 ¶ The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:
7 Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.
  See ps03734.
  Laugh See on ps00204, re1820, re1901.
Trusted in ... riches Saul likely rewarded Doeg. Money today rules politics and keeps people from salvation lu1216.
8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
9 I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.
Green olive tree Productive for good ps00103, ps09212.
  Wait on thy name ps02503, ps02505, ps02714.
Name ... good before thy saints As we rejoice in fellowship, praising God, our faith is strengthened.
