Explanation
Job again
1 ¶ Then Job answered and said,
2  How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
.3  These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me.
4  And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself.
5  If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach:
6  Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net.
7  Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.
2 - How long ... with words? Response to Bildad's words jb1802. Verbal abuse.
3 - Ten times This may be a clue about God's reason to give us ten commandments ex20 although ten here may not indicate a specific number. See ge3107 indicating often. Also ge3141, nu1422, ne0412, da0120.
3 - Make yourselves strange From tahkeru, a word not found elsewhere. The translation seems good.
4 - I have erred A mistake but not necessarily moral guilt.
  5 - Magnify ... against Be proud judges ob0121.
6 - God hath overthrown ... net Job feels that God is also against him.
  7 - I cry ... not heard Job has pleaded his innocence jb0326, jb0629, jb1003. See je2008, hk0102.
.8 ¶ He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.
9  He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.
10  He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree.
8 - Fenced up See jb0323, la0307,9, ho0206. He sees no way to turn in his perplexity.
8 - Stripped me "image from a deposed king, deprived of his robes and crown; appropriate to Job, once an emir with all but royal dignity" (La 5:16; Ps 89:39) (JFB).
10 - Removed ... tree Or "torn up like a tree." Job's early life held promise of great happiness and peace.
11  He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of his enemies.
12  His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle.
.13  He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me.
14  My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.
11 - His enemies Job feels as if he is treated like God's enemy. They are not, in fact, enemies.
12 - Troops ... against Again the picture of a besieged city. Contrast God's angels around the saints ps03407.
13 - Brethren far from me Often people who are shown the testing truths of the end times, give up their salvation because of not wanting to be separated from friends. This separation is described through verse 19.
15  They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight.
16  I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.
15 - They ... house The word "house" is from bayith and has broad meaning. It may be "household" or family. Compare ps02306, jos2415.
17  My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children's sake of mine own body.
18  Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me.
18 - Young children The word also means "ungodly." Here children do not respect age.
.19  All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.
.20  My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.
.21  Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
.22  Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
19 - Inward friends Literally "all the men of my counsel."
19 - They whom I loved This may have been the hardest to bear 2ti0416, ps05512, je2010. Jesus stood alone for us is6303. Many of us may also be called to stand while all around us reject truth and righteousness.
23 ¶ Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed ["inscribed" or "marked"] in a book!
.24  That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!
.25  For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
.26  And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27  Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
28  But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
29  Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.
23 - Written ... printed in a book Moses, whom I believe wrote out this ancient story as God helped him understand it, must have taken pleasure in fulfilling Job's wish.
24 - Iron pen Or "stylus" See on ps04501.
25 - For I know This note of confidence in the face of discouragement is a great comfort to those of us who read it. To hear the hymn tune, click.
26 - Though worms destroy Job knew he would see God in his flesh 1co1553. Many today believe that, when they see God, it will be in a spirit body. See on ec1207.
28 - Root Job warns his friends. He is confident of his salvation. They need to fear.
