Explanation
Job begins to understand that his soul is the issue of life (v10)
1 ¶ Then Job answered and said,
.2 Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.
.3 Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!
4 I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.
  Bitter As jb1921, ps03204.
Stroke is heavier Paraphrase "God's hand is so heavy on me that I cannot relieve myself adequately by groaning."
Where I might find him Separation is distressful for the righteous one mt2746, ps02201, so0601.
Order my cause Why couldn't his friends understand? Job longed for assurance from God.
6 Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.
7 There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.
Will he plead against...? No ... strengthen We hear Job's thoughts. Isaiah many centuries later could have encouraged him is4110.
Dispute He would have a chance to discuss it with God.
.8 ¶ Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:
9 On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:
  Cannot perceive him See ex1913.
.10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.
12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
Tried me This is a key point in Job's experience. Although he has not witnessed the Lord's permission for Satan to try him, he trusts God and realizes that how he relates to the situation is to be dealt with on a higher plane than is visible.
Come forth as gold Can you and I say that? Only in total submission to our Lord and in reliance on the promises. mal0303, ph0106, 1jo0302, 2pe0104, 2co0417.
My necessary food The word cluqqi has a broader meaning so "my prescribed portion" is better. Choq is "portion" in ge4722. It is also "statute" in ex1525, ex1816. Compare jn0635, je1516.
.13 ¶ But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.
14 For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.
  One mind See ja0117.
Appointed me From chuqqi as in v12 above.
15 Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.
16 For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:
.17 Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.
Troubled ... afraid God makes this clear in chapters 38 to 41.
