.
By His Sabbath miracles, did Jesus teach that the day was no longer to be considered a special day of rest?
.
John 5:5  And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6  When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7  The impotent man [man with no strength] answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8  Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9  And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
.10  The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
11  He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12  Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13  And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
14  Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
15  The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
.16  And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
.17 ¶ But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
.18  Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
.19  Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
.20  For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21  For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
When Jesus healed on the Sabbath and asked the healed person to carry his bed, the Jewish leaders did not like it. Some theologians teach that Jesus worked on the Sabbath to show that the Sabbath commandment was no longer valid. Why is this assertion untrue?

The passage we need to understand is verse 17 which is shown at the left . Here are two other translations.
"His reply to their accusation was, 'My Father works unceasingly, and so do I'." (Weymouth's NT)
"But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working still, and I am working." (RSV)
On the John 5 page (right col.) we saw the issue. Many theologians explain this verse as the end of the Sabbath commandment requirement. In John 9:1-41 we find the story of the blind man who had essentially the same experience with Jesus. There the Jews brought up the same accusation which Jesus again responded to.
What is God's Sabbath work? To draw us to Himself after having been separated by sin jn1232, thus to make us holy. See ez2012, jn0629. Compare le2007. The Sabbath is a time to rest  remembering God's work of creation ge0201 and thus His work of redemption de0515.
Jesus defended the work done on the Sabbath because restoration of fallen humans was the purpose of the Sabbath. The physical healing was a step in the restoration into God's image. Pointing the lame man to holy living jn0514 was the spiritual part. Compare the blind man's experience jn0935. Both parts (physical and spiritual) were samples of what we may expect when we are granted immortality 1co1554.
Sabbath work had been specifically authorized mt1205. For example see 1ch0932.
"My Father worketh." He never stops ps12104, ac1725. His rest on the earth's first seventh day we may understand to have been a special time while He continued as the source of love and power for the universe.
They accused only Jesus. Did you notice in v17 that Jesus' argument included the Father's work with His own. The Jews naturally didn't like this seeing that He was claiming divinity. Verse 19 helps us complete the picture. Jesus did not act independently.
Jesus' statement says nothing about  an end of the Sabbath or anything else as is claimed by some scholars. His words to the blind man say that the work will end when the night comes jn0904. This would be the work of redemption which ends at the close of human probation at the coming of Christ re2211. Of course other work of Father, Son, and Spirit continue constantly.
Even then the Sabbath does not end is6623. Praise God!
